Class Notes & Tips

These guys just plain rock for the first few stages. They are probably your only way to take out enemy Golems, Giants, & Gryphons this early in the game without resorting to Tarot Cards.  Well, maybe not GolemsAnyone can take them down! All you have to do is set your TACTIC to whichever enemy you want to take out first, and the Wizard will do the rest! For example, to take out a Golem, set it to WEAK, and to pick on a Giant or Gryphon, set it to STRONG.  They are all weak to Fire, so he will cast Fireball, and wipe them real good! And, because his attack is targeted (hence the * on the previous page next to the attack name!) you can easily hit whoever you want, no matter their position in the enemy unit!  Switching TACTICS like this is also a great way to probe the classes & find out are what element they are weakest to, so that you know which Tarot Cards or magic weapons to use for the tougher units & bosses you will encounter later on down the road.  A very powerful early game character to have, which is why you don’t start out with too many of them! The one glaring weakness is that, well, the wizard is weak.  He gains really terrible levels, except for Intelligence, and has low defenses.  All six of them!  It would be pointless to point out which ones, so just watch out when you face off against other Wizards or similar characters.

A nice bonus is that by making a Wizard the leader of a unit, you can recruit Giants!  If you want any of them, that is. I would recommend getting at least a couple to bolster your fighting ranks for the early stages, when damage soakers are rare.  I do have a problem or two with the Wizard class, however. The first issue is more personal than anything else. For some reason, the Wizard class is considered ‘evil’ in this game.  Because of that, I personally don’t like to have all that many in my units.  What can I say, I’m a nice guy! I usually tend about 4 or 5, and then dwindle down depending on how the special items show up.  I suppose 5 is quite a bit of them though!  But anyway, the item thing leads me to my second gripe...  In order to move up past the Mage class, you need to find a damn special item.  And not just one item is needed, but 2-stinky-dinky!  Ah! Ha! Haa!  To upgrade to a Sorcerer, you will need an “STAFF” (Undead Staff). To promote a Sorcerer to the almighty Lich, you will need an “UNDEAD” (Undead Ring).  No fun at all.  But as we all know in these games, the harder something is to get, the better it is. Golden Chocobo anyone? Anyway, the case is most definitely true here, because the Sorcerer, and especially the Lich, are arguably the best character classes in the whole game! So stick with it, and an item or two should come your way...
