Class Notes & Tips

Now this is irritating!  It maybe only irritating if you play both the SNES & PSX versions of this game.  It was decided by the powers that be at Quest that in the SNES version of this game, they would use a stupid name for this character class. A really stupid, unimaginative name. Which, in and of itself, is not really such a bad thing. But, honestly, I’ve known farts with more originality! However, when the PSX version came out, the powers that be at Atlus decided to dick around with the names of the entire Red Dragon character class!  So, for the SNES version, this class is called Red Dragon II, and the highest form of this class is called a Salamand.  However, in the PSX, this class is called a Salamander, and the highest form is called a Fire Breath(For the ease of the majority of players, I use the SNES naming scheme on my site.)

You still with me? Good, because there’s a still few things that need to be said about this class! Like all Dragon classes, the most important thing about this class is to be a damage magnet, but it’s more important for this branch of dragons.  Why?  Because you will not be able to go back to a town to recover very easily once you are firmly entrenched in a mountain range, and the long term survivability of a Mountain unit is important.  Ideally, you want them to last longer than 3 or 4 fights with needing a heal. You will probably not have any healers in your Mountain units, either.  With a Red Dragon II, you will be able to stay out in your designated terrain longer. There is one problem, though.  You might have noticed the really low value of his Cold Defense.  It just goes with the territory, I suppose. His terrain type does limit his usefulness quite a bit, but after all is said and done, if you want to make good Mountain units, you will want to use some of these.

The interesting dilemma is that while you are cavorting about in the mountains, you will most likely be fighting against units similar to the ones that you have made; i.e., Red Dragons, or members of the Hellhound class.  Which are both strong to Fire attacks.  The one way to get around this quandary is to equip your Red Dragon II with a weapon that has the Cold element.  This way, your boy will really lay into those enemy mountain men!  You still have to constantly worry about your Alignment, so maybe the high Fire defenses is a good thing in a way...  If you decide to use him in the Back Row, you will just have to learn how to target the humanoid characters in those units, which are all generally weak to Fire.  This way, you can deal hard hitting damage, or, if you don’t want him to make the kill, you can just have him target the opposing Red Dragon.  If you are looking to get some of these, Slust can provide them for you.
