Even more so than with the Octopus: Get in the water!!
If you are swimming, in the Back Row you will get two ultra powerful Maelstrom attacks that blasts the entire enemy unit! Twice! Otherwise, since there is no water to control, they simply launch out a tentacle. They gain slightly better levels an Octopus, and have slightly better defenses, except to Lightning. The irritating thing is that Maelstrom seems to miss at least half of the enemy unit most of the time. It almost seems like flying units have a better chance to dodge it or something. Or, maybe it’s just a simple correlation of those classes having higher Agility than most landlubber & water character classes. Whatever the case may be, Kraken seem to be better placed in the Front Row, due to their massive Hit Points.

It’s really this simple.
Either you use water units, or you don’t. And if you do, it would be rather naive of me to think that you wouldn’t be using these! They serve their purpose in this game pretty well I think. It’s just a pain in the ass to get them to where they can serve that purpose. Many people think this class is terrible, but I don’t, really. It’s all about the variety of your units, if you ask me. I highly doubt it that those same players who diss these do Kastolatian Sea without using at least one water unit! You don’t have access to an endless supply of Wyvern or Cockatris to make all your units High Sky at this point in the game anyway...
